Engineering, production and installation of mobile platforms for tramway pits

1) The context

As part of its workshop maintenance work, the company STIB launched a contract to equip itself with a system of mobile and modular covers equipped with guardrails for its tramway pits. Thanks to the platforms, operators can carry out various technical interventions on the trams in complete safety.

2) The customer

The STIB, Société des transports intercommunaux de Bruxelles, is a public law entity, founded in 1945, charged by the Brussels-Capital Region with organizing the operation of public transport on its terrirtory.

The company works around 5 priorities : the well-being of employees, the environment, social cohesion, accessibility and safety.

3) Project challenges

The customer was looking for a partner capable of offering a solution meeting following functional needs :

• Passage of the trams over the platforms
• Modularity of mobile platforms :
  • Possibility of positioning the elements against each other in order to increase the working length
  • Ability to move the platforms anywhere in the pits
  • Possibility of changing pits as needed, interoperability

• Input data : Provide mobile covers for 6 pits of 50m and 1 pit of 115m
  
  
  

4) Provided solutions

A specific platform had to be designed by our engineers to provide the flexibility required by the customer :

• Dimensions respecting the constraint of the passage of the tram without having to remove the platforms
• Mechanical interlocking system with coupling handles and wheel brake to hold a platform assembly in place
• Sizing and intallation of steel profiles parallel to the existing tram rails, for moving the mobile platforms by rolling
  
  
  
  
  
  

5) Results and conclusions

A result that meets the expectations of our partner !

A design starting from a blank sheet, responding, thanks to the ingenuity and expertise of the Mecawa teams, to a quality finshed product, ready to fulfill its functions in an optimal manner.
